Beckenbauer says Schweinsteiger is more comfortable away from problems in Manchester

Franz Beckenbauer believes he has seen a different Bastian Schweinsteiger than the one that played at Old Trafford last season.

The German missed most of the second half of last season due to injury but was included in Joachim Low’s squad for Euro 2016.

Beckenbauer was not sure as to what shape the World Cup winner would show up in but believes he is feeling better for not being at United and feeling the pressure and problems at the club.

Speaking about Schweinsteiger, Beckenbauer said: “Bastian has surprised me. He was stronger than expected in his 24 minutes against Hungary. He showed great joy of playing and also spiritual motivation.

“We all know how strong his will can be. We all remember his bloody face in the last minutes of the World Cup final. This we will see again.

“Why? Because he is away from the problems at Manchester. I guess he is feeling really comfortable in the Germany squad.”

Germany appear to be struggling entering the Euros to an extent. There is an imbalance in their squad and they may not have the fire power to go and win their second successive major tournament. Schweinsteiger’s inclusion could be down to the fact that they need all the guile and leadership qualities available to them in France this summer.

Schweinsteiger was considered a risky signing when he arrived last summer from Bayern Munich. He had slowed down considerably at Bayern Munich and missed 13 Bundesliga games in his final season at the club. On the wrong side of 30, it was believed that his best days were behind him.

He does offer United leadership qualities that they lack and can still dictate a game when circumstances are right but too often, teams are able to take the game to him and he is left exposed for his lack of speed. If United are to move forward, Schweinsteiger will have to suffice with being a peripheral figure in the squad and while he may be a good player to have around the squad, his impact will be limited.
