Man United confirmed the signing of Bailly from Valencia on Wednesday on a four-year deal, subject to a work permit.
The Ivorian is set to be the first of a number of signings this summer at Old Trafford, with the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Andre Gomes strongly linked with moves to the club. Mourinho praised Bailly upon news of his arrival.
“Eric is a young central defender with great natural talent. He has progressed well to date and has the potential to become one of the best around,” Mourinho said.
“We look forward to working with him to help nurture that raw talent and fulfil his potential. Eric is at the right club to continue his development.”
Daley Blind played at centre-back during the 2015/16 season but it was always clear that he wasn’t a natural defender and it is good that United have now ‘plugged the gap’ in signing Bailly.
Mourinho has developed a reputation over the course of his career of knowing how to build solid backlines and the task now is to improve other areas of the squad.
