Rio Ferdinand was surprised his former Manchester United team-mate Patrice Evra is still playing competitive football.
Evra started in France’s Euro 2016 opener against Romania on Friday night as the they got their campaign off to a flying start with a 2-1 victory.
The 35-year-old left Old Trafford in 2014, with many supporters feeling his best days were behind him. However, he’s been a regular starter for Juventus since departing Old Trafford, winning two Serie A titles and two Coppa Italias.
Speaking about his career, Ferdinand insists he thought Evra’s leg had gone at Man United.
“Patrice Evra is still playing you know. It’s unbelievable,” he said.
“When he was at Manchester United I thought, ‘wow, this guy’s legs are not looking good.’
“He’s played for three more years!”
Ferdinand and Evra played alongside one another for eight-and-a-half years, winning five Premier League titles before both players left the club in the summer of 2014. He has since gone on to make 34 appearances for Juventus last season and 35 showings for the club this campaign.
He was always one to interact with fans and always gave back to them for their unconditional support. Many were upset to see him leave after a disappointing campaign and it’s brilliant to see him in spectacular form.
He claimed he never wanted to leave United but it’s good to see him making new memories, his goal against Bayern Munich in the Champions League and his celebration in front of Luis Suarez and the Stretford End will always live in the memory of fans.
