Atletico Madrid attacker Antoine Griezmann has revealed his favourite player was former Manchester United man David Beckham.
The Frenchman is currently on duty with his national side at Euro 2016 and while not exactly like Beckham, they do have some similarities. Both men are adept from a dead ball situation and are attacking midfielders with an eye for a goal.
The 25-year-old discussed the extent of Beckham’s influence on him ranging from his appearance on the field to how he styles his hair.
“I am a massive fan of his. On the pitch he had class and off it he was always very clean and well dressed,” Griezmann said.
“I remember the 2012 Olympics in London when he was in the boat with the Olympic torch and his hair didn’t move!
“At first I wanted to have the same hairstyle, but then he had his hair long and for me it was too long to wait six months for mine to grow.
“I’ve calmed down a bit with the dyes and such but I like to change it regularly.”
He added: “I play with long sleeves because that’s what he did and I also wear the No 7 as that was his number.
“However, it’s also true that I’m not like him because I’m quite shy, but that’s something I’m trying to improve upon and I’m working with my sister on that.”
Griezmann has been linked with a move to the Premier League in recent transfer windows with Chelsea mooted as the most likely landing spot.
Based on the arrival of Jose Mourinho and his counter-attacking style, however, Griezmann might better be suited to a move to Old Trafford. He has blossomed in a system similar to Mourinho’s at Atletico under Diego Simeone and has the speed to excel under the new Man United boss.
Beckham moved from Manchester to Madrid in 2003 but Griezmann might be inclined to consider a move in the other direction. If Mourinho needs someone to turn Griezmann’s head, he might enlist the help of United’s former number seven to do just that.
