Chelsea have had a bid in the region of £32 million for Valencia and Portugal’s attacking midfielder Andre Gomes rejected according to reports.
Antoine Conte is busy at the Euros as he finishes his spell as the manager of Italy but the club are trying to sign targets while he is away, it appears. It remains to be seen what style Conte deploys at Chelsea but the highly rated Gomes is flexible and is young enough to adapt to whatever system he is in.
The 22-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in recent weeks with Manchester United another possible landing spot and Jose Mourinho and Man United might have a lead in the race to sign the player given the fact that he is represented by Gestifute, owned by Jorge Mendes.
The Valencia player has also admitted his future at the club is uncertain, which has alerted many top teams in Europe.
Gomes started on Tuesday night during Portugal’s 1-1 draw with Iceland and assisted Nani for the opening goal after a half an hour. He operated on the right-hand side of midfield in a 4-3-3 tactic.
He impressed last night going forward but does not have a natural tendency to defend when out of possession and his lacklustre effort helped Iceland’s Johann Gudmundsson find Birkir Bjarnason at the back post with an elegant cross to draw the sides level in the second half.
If Gomes is to play in a Jose Mourinho side, he will have to improve his defensive tendencies but the new United manager may feel that at 22, he is capable of improving this aspect of Gomes’ play. he could act as a player similar to Chelsea’s Oscar at No.10 for United under Mourinho and while he only scored two goals lat year, he is capable of linking play, shifting defenders with his movement and playing in a multitude of positions in midfield.
