Fenerbahce interested in signing Juan Mata from Manchester United

Fenerbahce are keen to sign Juan Mata from Manchester United according to reports in Turkey.

The Turkish club have already signed Nani and Robin van Persie from Manchester United and now wish to sign Mata as a replacement for Diego Ribas, who wants to move to France in the summer. It’d be like a mini-United out in Turkey if Juan joined.

Mata fell out of favour under Mourinho at Chelsea despite winning consecutive player of the year awards at the club and was subsequently sold to Manchester United where the 28-year-old was quick to become a fan favourite for his creativity and eye for goal.

One of the main problems with Mata in Mourinho’s system is that he is not quick enough to get back in transition and break out when they win the ball back. Mata is more suited to an attacking role where he can operate in tight spaces and find passes with his wonderful vision.

He lacks physicality also and there is speculation that he will become one of the first casualties under the new Man United manager.

It remains to be seen just how many players Mourinho gets rid of as he overhauls the United squad. Memphis Depay is another player in attacking midfield that has been an uncertain future at the club and with Wayne Rooney going through somewhat of an evolution in his game and dropping deeper in midfield, Mourinho needs a creative number ten to ensure United are able to break down defences they face next season.

Marcus Rashford will suit Mourinho’s style, as will Martial but if he doesn’t land some of his targeted signings and with United in the Europa League next season, he will need a relatively big squad to ensure United survive the year in tact.
