Jones endured a torrid 2015/16 season at Man United largely due to injury, making just 13 appearances over the course of the campaign.
There were rumours that United had lost patience with Jones, with the signing of Eric Bailly from Villarreal only intensifying the speculation over the Englishman’s future.
But Mourinho believes that Jones is capable of resurrecting his United career and even emulating the achievements of John Terry, who was Mourinho’s captain during their time at Chelsea.
Jones is undoubtedly a talent but he cannot expect to have much of a future at Old Trafford if he fails to stay injury-free.
Mourinho may well be able to transform Jones but, first and foremost, the defender must focus on eradicating the fitness issues that have stalled his once promising career. Only then will he be able to kick on and develop some consistency.
Chris Smalling did just that last season and he is now one of United’s most important players. The hope is that Jones can do the same but he has a long way to go if he is to win over sceptical fans.
