Manchester United fans have come to the defence of David de Gea after a disappointing performance for Spain against Croatia in Euro 2016.
He was beaten at his near post by an 87th-minute winner from Ivan Perisic as the reigning champions suffered their first defeat at the Euros since 2004, a run of 15 matches.
It’s was a huge step for De Gea to have been chosen over Iker Casillas by Vicente del Bosque in the tournament but a poor showing could impact his chances of being Spain’s No.1 goalkeeper.
Here’s what fans had to say about the Spaniard’s performance:
Don't think a goalkeeper should ever be beaten at his near post. Regardless. So that's not good from De Gea. Could be crucial for Spain.

De Gea had a bad night in goal for #ESP, but silly to blame him for defeat. Spain not been all that impressive.

De Gea is the best GK in the world! Spain defence was awful tonight! Ramos was sleeping all through and Pique had too much Shakira????

Ramos missed a penalty that could have probably sealed it for Spain, but let's talk about De Gea.

Casillas is rightly regarded as one of the most talented players of his generation but its been hard to ignore De Gea’s incredible performances for United this season, the switch had to come sooner or later and one poor performance shouldn’t affect his position on the team.
The hope now is for de Gea to cement his position on the first-team for years to come and with a big fixture against Italy at the Stade de France on Monday it could be the perfect time for him to prove himself.
It’s odd to see Dave have a bad game, it’s something we rarely see as United fans as he hasn’t put a foot wrong and has definitely earned his title as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
