Real Madrid have given up on trying to sign Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea, according to Guillem Balague.

De Gea came close to a move to the Bernabeu last summer only for his deal to collapse in the final hours of the transfer window and went on to sign a contract extension at Old Trafford.

He has still been continuously linked with a move to Spain but Balague believes Zinedine Zidane’s side have have accepted his role at Old Trafford and will keep Keylor Navas as their No.1 goalkeeper.

“I think De Gea now is a clear situation,” he said.

“Real Madrid have decided not to go with him. He’s happy, he wants to stay with Manchester United and see what Jose Mourinho brings to him.”

De Gea is arguable United’s best player and keeping him at the club would be a huge boost for Mourinho as he looks to assemble capable of winning titles and getting back into the Champions League.

Mourinho has one of the best goalkeepers in the world and keeping the world-class talent on his side will be a stepping stone in taking the club back to their former glory days.

He’s been focused on impressing for Spain at the European Championships but it’s great to hear he’s looking forward to football under Mourinho next season.
