Morgan Schneiderlin and Anthony Martial progress past Northern Ireland and Paddy McNair

Morgan Schneiderlin and Anthony Martial have reached the Euro 2016 quarter-finals with France in a 2-1 win over the Republic of Ireland.

The Manchester United duo were unused substitutes in the victory, but may feature next Sunday for Didier Deschamps’ side as they face the winners of Monday’s tie between England and Iceland.

Antoine Griezmann struck twice as France came from behind and some fans felt Jose Mourinho should be trying to trigger his release clause rather than chasing after Paul Pogba.

Paddy McNair was an unused substitute for Ireland and they will be heading home after a fine campaign following their 1-0 defeat to Wales in Paris.

Dimitri Payet has shown his worth on Deschamps’ squad and his spectacular match-winning free-kick against Cameroon has left Martial sat on the bench, he started the match against Albania, but struggled to make an impact and was substituted at half-time.

Schneiderlin’s inclusion in the squad came as a surprise after Lassana Diarra was ruled out by injury, while N’Golo Kante has been crucial to the French side and his impressive form has seen him win every international he has played.

The hosts are the favourites to win the tournament and an important fixture against Iceland or England could see Martial and Schneiderlin come up against United team-mates Wayne Rooney, Marcus Rashford and Chris Smalling.
