David Moyes: I tried to bring Toni Kroos to Manchester United from Bayern Munich

David Moyes has revealed he wanted to sign Toni Kroos from Bayern Munich before he signed for Real Madrid during his spell as manager of Manchester United.

The German international opted for a move to the Bernabeu from Bayern in July 2014 and signed a six-year deal with Los Blancos.

Moyes took charge at Old Trafford ahead of the 2013/14 campaign but failed to see out the season as manager after a run of disappointing performances.

Speaking about Kroos, Moyes insists he was looking to find an ideal replacement for Paul Scholes.

“I wanted to bring Kroos to Manchester United, from Bayern,” he said.

“I thought his range of passing and his ability to play people in would have made him a top United player, maybe Scholes.

“He’s gone on and shown at Real Madrid what a fantastic footballer he is.

“Kroos is a special talent, probably the closest thing at this tournament [Euro 2016] to a Xabi Alonso, an Andrea Pirlo or Paul Scholes.”

Since joining Madrid, Kroos has made 99 appearances across all competitions over two seasons and has won the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, and UEFA Champions League.

Whether he would have been able to fill Scholes’ shoes is unknown, but Kroos is a talented midfielder and would have played an excellent role in the centre of the field.

The interest in his services came to an end after Moyes was sacked as manager, but Mourinho is now looking for someone to play the same role and is prioritising a deal for Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba.
