Eric Bailly has begun his own pre-season training ahead of joining up with his Manchester United teammates in early July.
The Ivorian defender became Jose Mourinho‘s first signing and Man United fans are eager to see him in action alongside Chris Smalling in the heart of defence. For all of Daley Blind‘s quality and good performances last season, everybody knew we needed a new centre-back and Bailly is that man.
The countdown has begun. ?????? Can't wait to start as a Red Devil! ? / Le compte à rebors a commencé ! pic.twitter.com/txHHRJafhh
Bailly is probably just as excited about it as United fans are. After all, he’s gone from Espanyol’s B team in 2013 to United within the space of three years which is excellent progression for a player who is still only 22.
Will he be ready for the big step up to the Premier League? United fans certainly hope so and if he can start singing from the same hymn sheet as Chris Smalling from an early stage, there is potential there for the sort of defensive partnership we haven’t had since Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. Smalling and Blind were good but their game always had flaws together.
Next season is going to be blockbuster for United. Mourinho is coming in as is Bailly and no doubt a few other big signings. After three years of turmoil under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal, is this the turning point which could steer us back to the top of the Premier League? Here’s hoping so and that Bailly can become a major player for us down the years.
