Antonio Valencia insists Manchester United are desperate to defeat rivals Manchester City in their International Champions Cup clash in Beijing.
Jose Mourinho has been appointed the new manager of the club and many of the players have issued declarations of intent via social media ahead of the new season. The pre-season tour will be the first chance for many of them to convince Mourinho they should be a part of his plans as it will also be the first time Pep Guardiola and Mourinho will play each other as the managers of Man City and Man United respectively.
Despite the fact that it’s only a pre-season tour, getting the chance to watch Guardiola and Mourinho renew their rivalry will excite fans around the world and Valencia eluded to this when speaking to reporters recently.
“It’s a derby and everyone wants to win those games for the supporters that are there,” he said.
“Let’s hope it’s an exciting occasion for everyone over there and they can have a lot of fun watching.
“It’s always important to prepare well and get fit and it’s even better when you are up against two sides like those [Dortmund and City].”
Mourinho presents an entirely different way of playing than Louis van Gaal and will have a more counter-attacking style than the Dutchman. One of the most criticised aspects of van Gaal’s play was the sterile, and sometimes boring, possession-based football he played with little return in terms of goals and chances.
Under the Portuguese man, United are sure to sit back, defend and hit their opponents in waves of counter-attacking football that will delights fans and will surely get the players back into a space where they are enjoying their football.
His style will be in stark contrast to Guardiola’s free-flowing, attacking football and given the fact that both managers are fiercely competitive they won’t want to give the other man an inch. Fans are in for an exciting time as their intense rivalry commences in the Premier League this season.
