Portugal defender Jose Fonte insists Manchester United will regret not signing 18-year-old Renato Sanches.
He had been extensively scouted by Man United last season but opted for a €35 million move to German champions Bayern Munich this summer.
Sanches showed plenty of potential on Thursday night, scoring the equaliser in Portugal’s defeat of Poland in the Euro 2016 quarterfinals and also turned in his penalty in the shoot-out.
Speaking about Sanches, Fonte claims Man United have missed out on an extremely good talent.
“Being a Premier League player, for me, Man United missed out on a very good talent,” Fonte said.
“He’s a nice kid, he listens to the old guys, he wants to learn, which is good. It’s great to have him around and he’ll be the future of the national side for sure.”
“He’s got no fear. He just doesn’t care. He goes and asks for the ball every second.
“He’s got power and strength, energy to run all day and great ability.
“It is lucky for Bayern Munich that they have him.”
Man United were thought to be favourites to land his services but were caught napping when Bayern swooped in and signed him to a five-year deal.
His performances have earned him plenty of praise and Ryan Giggs has recently stated he felt Man United should have just paid his transfer fee.
Sanches would have been a brilliant signing at the club and could have linked up with the young talent we have at Old Trafford, but his name has instead been added to the list of players we let slip through our fingers.
