The Swede agreed agreed a one-year deal at the club on Friday afternoon with the option to extend for 12 months after signing a contract worth £200,000 per week.
Speaking about the deal, Meulensteen insists Sir Alex would have tried to bring in young talented players rather than Ibrahimovic.
“Maybe nine times out of 10 he would not have made a decision like this,” he said.
“That is because of everything that Alex Ferguson wanted to do with youngsters — bring them through and improve them as players.”
“In this situation he brings a bit more charisma and personality. Jose Mourinho has worked with him before and had no hesitation signing him.
“Obviously, the strategy was trying to bring in young talented players with potential and build it — but with Van Persie it was a different reason.
“Robin was a proven player. If you look at Ibrahimovic, there is a slight risk as he has never played in the Premier League.”
Mourinho has already underlined Rashford’s development in his squad next season and there is no doubt he’ll be relishing the opportunity to learn from one of the best strikers in the world.
The arrival of Ibrahimovic will help take the goal-scoring burden off the youngsters next campaign. Anthony Martial and Rashford were carrying the team up front even though it was their debut seasons at Old Trafford.
When we last lost the league on goal difference we went out and signed Robin van Persie, who played an integral role in helping the club win our last Premier League title. Now we’ve got Ibrahimovic at Old Trafford fans will be hoping he can help United lift their 21st league title.
