Ryan Giggs had served as assistant manager for the past two seasons under Louis van Gaal and recently parted ways with the club to purse his management career.
Faria is set to replace Giggs as Man United’s No. 2, having worked over all the Portuguese manager’s managerial appointments at Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid over the past few years.
Speaking about Mourinho, Sir Alex insists he would have chosen Giggs if he didn’t already have an assistant manager.
“You have got to have, in your assistant, someone you have trusted all your life,” he said.
“When I came to United, I brought Archie Knox because he was a valuable person for me. I trusted him 100%. Jose Mourinho has had his assistant for years and, quite rightly, has stuck by his own man.
“If Jose hadn’t had an assistant, I know he would have taken Ryan.”
It’s sad to see a club legend leave, but it’s the best decision for Giggs if he wants the opportunity to manage at Old Trafford further down the line.
He’s won a countless amount of trophies as a player but his management career is only just starting and it’ll be an ideal stepping stone at another club as he looks to pick up some much needed experience.
Giggs will be frustrated he was overlooked at Man United for Mourinho but the job in hand to rebuild the club is a massive one to force onto the Welshman at the start of his management career and we couldn’t afford to get the appointment wrong for a third time.
