Manchester City’s new signing Ilkay Gundogan has explained how a proposed move to Manchester United fell apart last summer.
The German midfielder was linked heavily with Man United last year but nothing materialised and United instead opted to sign Bastian Schweinsteiger from Bayern Munich.
The versatile midfielder’s new fans might not be too happy to hear Gundogan saying “not everything happened like I wanted it to” but he is at City now and will either sink or swim based on his performances.
The 25-year-old also explained how he did not want to leave Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer leaving the German outfit with nothing to show for developing the player:
“Maybe last year it was close,” Gundogan told Sport360.
“But not everything happened like I wanted it to. Maybe it was not the right moment and at the end we decided to stay and renew my contract, to extend for one more year.
“We always had the conversation with Dortmund and agreed that if I left, I will not leave for free, for zero. So I renewed my contract and now this year everyone is lucky and happy how it came to an end.”
United are in need of a central midfielder and have been linked with a few this summer. Blaise Matuidi was reportedly given permission to leave France’s Euro 2016 training camp to fly to England to discuss a transfer and Paul Pogba Andre Gomes is another named linked with the club.
Jose Mourinho has a wide selection of talent within his squad but it remains to be seen whether they can work in Mourinho’s system and if they can work together in tandem with other options at the position.
Schweinstieger and Schneiderlin have been names as a potential pairing but the German’s fitness needs to be tested and the French man’s ability to operate at United has come under scrutiny.
Gundogan would have been perfect for United but if a player like Pogba ends up signing for the club, which has been widely reported as a possibility, United fans will forget who Ilkay Gundogan is and will be glad the deal never materialised as he had hoped.
