Henrikh Mkhitaryan has already been confirmed as a Manchester United player but the club are yet to reveal what shirt number he will wear. With that in mind, we’re going to take a look at all the numbers he’s worn over his career to see if there’s one we can expect him to wear.
FC Pyunik Erewan 2007/8: No.35
This is where it all began for Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Based in his native Armenia, it was at FC Pyunik where he made the transition into a professional having graduated from their academy system.
FC Pyunik Erewan 2007/8 – 2009/10: No.22
This is where Henrikh first wore the No.22 shirt having changed from No.35 and this is where his affiliation began, way back at the start in Armenia.
Metalurg Donetsk 2009/10 – 2010/11: No.22
In search of a higher level of football, Mkhitaryan moved to the Ukrainian Premier League and became a hit. In his second season he was named their youngest ever captain in history at just 21 and bigger clubs came knocking.
Shakhtar Donetsk 2010/11 – 2012/13: No.22
This is where we see Mkhitaryan’s first big move and despite switching country he stayed loyal to No.22. He wore it for three years in Ukraine and on top of the three he’d already worn it in Armenia it meant he’d had it for six years of his career.
Borussia Dortmund 2012/13 – 2015/16: No.10
It was at Dortmund where Mkhitaryan stopped wearing the No.22 shirt. As a central figure in Jurgen Klopp’s side, he was given the No.10 traditionally given to a team’s playmaker. He was now on the centre stage and although his best season didn’t come until Klopp had actually left, he built a great reputation in Germany.
Armenia 2008/9 – 2009/10: No.10
At the start of his international career, Mkhitaryan wore the No.10 shirt. Armenia isn’t littered with talented players so when somebody like Mkhitaryan comes through, he steps right into the limelight straight away.
Armenia 2010/11 – Present: No.18
However, although he’s been Armenia’s main man it didn’t stop him changing to the No.18 shirt back in the 2010/11 season and he’s worn that number ever since. Manchester United fans will have great memories of that shirt number which was donned by none other than Paul Scholes, as was No.22 when he came out retirement, but as Ashley Young occupies it already, it’s not up for grabs.
All in all, it looks like Mkhitaryan is going to become United’s new No.22. The shirt is available and neither the No.10 or No.18 are free, so unless he takes a shirt number he wasn’t worn before then we’ll be seeing Henrikh follow in the footsteps of John O’Shea, Ronnie Wallwork, Nick Powell and Scholes when he came out of retirement.
