Manchester United are back in action this weekend in our pre-season curtain raiser away to Wigan Athletic.
The fixture was added by Jose Mourinho only last week in order to give him an opportunity to see his players in action before he makes a final decision on who will go to China. With that in mind, here are three players we think Jose must start on Saturday.
It’s been a long time coming for Shaw since September last year when he suffered a horrific double leg break against PSV Eindhoven but this weekend should be when we see him back in a United shirt playing football.
Shaw turned 21 this week but his birthday will be far from why he’s excited – after nearly a year out, Shaw knows he has the opportunity to become Mourinho’s first choice left-back at United and for somebody who grew up as a Chelsea fan, it’s basically the dream scenario. I can’t wait to see him play.
To say Memphis’ first year at United was underwhelming is an understatement. He never recovered from the downward spiral he went on following Shaw’s injury and that downturn lasted right up until the end of the season.
But he can now put that year behind him and move on. It seems fitting that Memphis’ new chance will come at the same time as Shaw returns and I hope they can revive their partnership which looked so dangerous on the left flank because if they rekindle that then we’re going to be so dangerous down that side, and that’s even without Anthony Martial.
The marked Juan? As far as most fans are concerned, Mata being sold by Mourinho is completely inevitable having been considered surplus to requirements at Chelsea but there are plenty who want to see the diminutive Spaniard kept at the club.
In a dark few years he’s been one of the shining lights at times and if there is going to be a game where Mourinho gives Mata a chance then it is Wigan this weekend, especially after a whole summer off having been left out of the Spain squad for Euro 2016.
