Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has predicted Paul Pogba to be the “best midfielder in the world.”
The 23-year-old is reportedly on his way to Old Trafford after Man United tabled a record £100m bid in order to land his signature.
Some pundits, including former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler, have criticised the potential move, insisting the fee is too high.
However, Ferdinand believes Man United should pursue the Frenchman.
“Manchester United have a strong attack. It’s the midfield and the defence that needs strengthening,” he said.
“I think €120million is a lot of money, for any player. You’d expect 40-plus goals per season for that figure. But Pogba is going to be the best midfielder in the world in the next couple of years. He is a leader, who will grow into an even better leader.”
To see such an accolade come from a former teammate is a huge testament to Pogba’s brilliance. Ferdinand has noted before that, even from a young age, everybody at Carrington knew that he was different and certainly one for the future.
Since his departure in 2012, Pogba has scalped new heights, forming the backbone of a rampant Juventus side and a French side littered with big names. The fee may seem excessive, but at just 23-year-old, there really is no limit on how much Pogba can reach.
