Zlatan Ibrahimovic has officially been given the No.9 shirt by Manchester United.
The Swedish striker becomes the 7th player to wear the No.9 shirt at Man United and it means Anthony Martial will have to give up the number.
Fans will be hoping Ibrahimovic can follow in the footsteps of past United great strikers such as Andy Cole and Brian McClair. Given the fact he scored 50 goals last season for Paris St Germain, his record certainly suggests he’ll get on just fine.
United’s two other new signings have also been given their numbers. Henrikh Mkhitaryan will don the No.22 shirt which he has worn at multiple clubs throughout his career to date while Eric Bailly will wear the No.3 shirt, most recently made famous by Patrice Evra.
I’m not surprised Ibrahimovic has been given the No.9 shirt and I highly doubt Martial is really too bothered by having it taken away from him, least not because he’s been given Ryan Giggs’ famous No.11 shirt in return. Adnan Januzaj has moved to No.15.
United’s official website does state these numbers are provisional but I can’t see how they will change.
