The Uruguayan defender made his Manchester United debut against West Ham last December, and earned a irregular spot in the side under Louis van Gaal after impressing with a series of energetic and disciplined displays at right back.
However, Varela was excluded from Jose Mourinho‘s 25-man pre-season squad with many reports suggesting that, alongside Tyler Blackett and James Wilson, the 22-year-old was not part of Jose’s plans for next season.
The 22-year-old will spend the 2016/17 season at Frankfurt, who narrowly avoided relegation last season, in the interest of ensuring game time next season.

Varela’s decision to find another club for next season is wise. It is clear that under Mourinho, who wants to reduce his first team squad to just 23 players, the Uruguayan would struggle to feature regularly.
At a club that struggled defensively last season, Varela will be sure to earn some valuable game time in a high quality league. His alertness on the ball and supreme energy will serve him well in such a competitive league, for a side that only avoided relegation through a playoff last term.
Varela has already displayed his defensive calibre to United fans and he could prove to be a fundamental asset at Old Trafford is he continues to progress in Germany next season.
