Bastian Schweinsteiger has posted a photo of himself training in preparation for the 2016/17 campaign.

The 31-year-old remains on a mandatory FIFA-imposed three week break after playing for Germany at Euro 2016.

After a promising start to his Manchester United career, the German faded during the latter parts of the 2015/16 campaign amid a string of injuries.

Schweinsteiger’s most recent social media post shows that the midfielder is already working hard – in what looks like his own personal gym –  ahead of the new campaign under Jose Mourinho.

After arriving to a fanfare of bewildered, delighted supporters, Schweinsteiger’s first season at Old Trafford proved to be anticlimactic. Inundated by constant injury setbacks, perhaps struggling to deal with the overly physical nature of the Premier League, the 31-year-old failed to discover any momentum under Louis van Gaal.

Nevertheless, Schweinsteiger, even in an injury hit season, still provided glimpses of his remarkable control and precision in the centre of the park. There were times – the first leg against Club Bruges back in August 2015 springs to mind – where the German directed the speed and direction of proceedings with unfathomable ease, almost as if he had the other 21 players on puppet springs.

It was a joy to watch live, and serves as evidence that, when fit and surrounded by the right players, Schweinsteiger can be a huge asset for Mourinho this season.
