The 30-year-old joined up with the squad for their pre-season tour of China but didn’t feature in Man United’s 4-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund.
Rooney was subjected to widespread derision last season after a string of poor performances at No.9, with many supporters declaring that the Englishman’s time at the top is over. However, Rooney, clearly galvanised by the arrival of Mourinho, is in positive spirits ahead of the new season.
“Yeah, it has been great,” he said when asked about life under Mourinho.
“The training has been tough and you can see why he has won trophies at the clubs he has been at.
“I have enjoyed it, it has been difficult in the heat out in China, but it has been really good and I am just looking forward to getting involved in the games.”
Every team managed by Mourinho, from his treble winning Inter Milan side to his record breaking Chelsea side, is hallmarked by an unbreakable level of togetherness and collective drive on the pitch.
Needless to say, hours of hard work is poured into perfecting the methods put in place by Mourinho – methods that have seen the 53-year-old win trophies in four different countries.
It will take time for the ‘Mourinho effect’ to fully settle in. But when it does, it’s hard to overestimate how far this team can go.
