Timothy Fosu-Mensah has been discussing his Manchester United career to date, labelled his breakthrough into the first team last season as ‘a dream’ and outlining his ambitions under new boss Jose Mourinho.
Fosu-Mensah broke into the Man United first team last February against Arsenal amid a defensive injury crisis, and made his first start against Watford a week later.
The 18-year-old, who made eight appearances last season has been lauded by many for his resolute, powerful and reliable style at such a young age.
Speaking to Youth Academies, Fosu-Mensah reflected on the past six months
“To play for Manchester United, I think it is every player’s dream,” he said.
“I feel very proud to be part of a very great club. The fans of Manchester are truly amazing; they always stick by the side of the players.
“My aim last season was to make my debut for Manchester United and that happened, so I was very pleased with that. I played 10 games and believed I developed well from that and learned a lot from it… So I’m happy how last season went for me.”
The Dutchman also shed light on his goals for the upcoming year, stating his desire to become a more “complete” player.
“This season I have set goals, I want to play the most games and stay fit for the whole season.”
“I also want to keep on developing and to progress into a top player and become a complete player under this very good manager Jose Mourinho.
“I think the English game is much faster and more physical than what I was used to back in Holland.
Those who saw Fosu-Mensah’s debut, a powerful, controlled and imposing 30 minutes against Arsenal, knew that the youngster had something special. He had an air of conviction about him, and his 18-year-old physique matched up with – and occasionally eclipsed – Arsenal’s elite.
He offers much more than just solidity all across the back; he offers an injection of charged energy bursting forward, and can break through midfield lines in the blink of an eye. Under the tutelage of Mourinho, a notoriously top defensive coach, Fosu-Mensah has a very promising season ahead of him.
