Timothy Fosu-Mensah is set to sign a new contract with Manchester United, according to reports.

The news arrives amid speculation surrounding his future, with various sources claiming that the 18-year-old could be allowed to leave the club this summer.

Fosu-Mensah impressed fans with a series of powerful, composed displays at right back and centre-back last season under Louis van Gaal.

According to Joe Bernstein, the Dutchman has been told he is part of Jose Mourinho‘s plans this year, and is primed to sign a new deal with the club.

Speculation surrounding Fosu-Mensah’s potential move away from Old Trafford comes after the youngster trained away from the main first-team squad.

But this alone doesn’t equate to the 18-year-old being ostracised from the squad. Indeed, Fosu-Mensah confirmed yesterday that he was recovering from a groin strain he picked up whilst on tour in China, and training individually is what usually happens with convalescing members of the squad.

To let a player of Fosu-Mensah’s enormous potential leave the club would be immensely short sighted; Man United fans would be delighted to see the 18-year-old sign a new deal with the club after what they saw last season.

Moreover, in the context of what Mourinho looks for in a defender, Fosu-Mensah certainly fits the bill: at just 18, his physique is immense, and his work rate, composure on the ball and sheer running power will certainly appeal to the Portuguese.
