The French midfielder will soon complete a move back to Man United in a deal worth a world record fee and become Mourinho’s fourth signing in a big summer of action.
Lots has been said about Pogba, the price tag on his head and how much influence he’d have at United. Speaking about that, Yorke said he expected him to adopt a similar sort of role as Patrick Vieira did at Arsenal.
He said: “You ask questions about Pogba – is he better then Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi? No he’s not.
“Is he a Paul Scholes in midfield who is going to dominate games and get you 18, 19 goals a season? No, he’s not that type either.
“He’s more in the mould of Patrick Vieira.
“He’s got that presence in midfield and can get forward when he needs to, so he’s obviously got something to be worth £100m.
“The Premier League has become such a global spectacle and the revenue that is created by teams is enormous now, but that’s the modern day game, I’m afraid. That’s just the way it is.
“I’m sure Pogba will be a great acquisition to the Manchester United squad.”
I think that’s a fair comparison to have because Pogba will be used in a Vieira type role. He’s certainly not best suited to a deeper defensive midfield role as we saw at Euro 2016 and as we’ve already got an abundance of No.10 options, he’s unlikely to play there either.
Mourinho loves specialist players and Pogba is perfectly suited to playing a central midfield partnership as the more advanced and adventurous one, something he could do well alongside Morgan Schneiderlin for example.
In terms of what United need in a new signing, it doesn’t get much more perfect than Pogba and we’re all just itching to hear the official announcement so we can move on from it. Pogba in midfield for United next season? What a game changing signing that will be.
