Wayne Rooney walked out to a 50,000 plus strong crowd inside Old Trafford and a wonderful mosaic in the warm dusk of a Manchester night.
Fans held the mosaic aloft as Rooney along with his sons were given a rapturous applause in recognition of the work he has done at Manchester United for the last 12 years.
Taking his football contributions in isolation, it’s the recognition he deserved:

I’ve not hidden my overall feelings towards Rooney but as a player he’s offered so much in over a decade of football alongside some great strikers, and he’s outlasted all of them including van Nistelrooy, Ronaldo, Berbatov, Tevez and more.
Rooney is only a few goals away from becoming Man United’s highest ever goalscorer and he is already England’s record goalscorer, so he’s had one hell of a career for both club and country. The Champions League, Premier League, the FA Cup and countless other titles, Rooney’s won pretty much all there is to win at club level in England. Fair play to him.
Going forward, here’s hoping Jose Mourinho can bring the best back out of Rooney because a couple of years back at his best in the twilight of his career would be a nice way to end it at United (if he is to stay).
