Jose Mourinho has provided an update on his Manchester United squad ahead of their FA Community Shield fixture against Leicester City at Wembley Stadium.
His side had an underwhelming pre-season, but would have been a great opportunity to bring his players back to full fitness and help them and get acquainted with their new team-mates.
He completed the signings of Eric Bailly, Henrikh Mkhitarayn and Zlatan Ibrahimovic this summer, who have all had the opportunity to play and adapt to life at Man United.
Speaking about his players, Mourinho insists they aren’t at a top level but are ready to compete.
“One thing is to start five weeks ago, like some of them, and another thing is to start one week ago – it is completely different,” he said.
“The way we work we try to bring them on as fast as we can. I won’t say to top form but to a level where they are ready to compete. That is the reality of modern football.”
Mourinho has also been very vocal of his intent to sign a fourth fundamental signing at the club and has confirmed in his press conference that fans can look forward to a new signing within the coming days.
He has given plenty of players the opportunity to play during the pre-season and has switched his squads around while he learns the strengths and weaknesses of his new players.
The Portuguese boss has put emphasis on his targets and will be looking forward to getting stuck into the Premier League in Man United’s opening fixture against Bournemouth on August 14.
