Former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson has hailed the signing of Paul Pogba from Juventus, insisting he is exactly the type of player the side needs.
Pogba, who joined Man United in 2009, was tipped by many to be a future regular at Old Trafford after displaying his brilliance at youth level, but was shown the door in 2012 after a schism with Sir Alex Fergsuson – much to the disapproval of many supporters.
However, after four years of unfettered success in Italy, the 23-year-old is set for a return to Old Trafford for a record fee of £89m.
Robson, who was lucky enough to witness a young Pogba in the flesh, expressed his enthusiasm at the prospect of seeing the Frenchman return to Manchester.
“He has got a good build, he is an athletic lad, is a very good player and has a good temperament as well. It is going to be a very good signing for Manchester United.
“He is the type of midfielder we need at this moment in time.
“If you are making £300m or £400m in the commercial department, why not spend it on players?
“Because it is much more important Manchester United win Champions Leagues, the title and are successful because that’s why people want to follow you, because you are successful.”
Sunday’s game against Leicester City – despite the positive result – revealed a large Pogba-shaped hole in United’s midfield. The lack of urgency, power, mobility and awareness led to attacking moves fizzling out, alongside giving Leicester the chance to break through the lines.
But with Pogba lurking in the centre, those issues are set to be a thing of a past. He is not, contrary to popular belief, just an ominous attacking presence; he can tackle hard, sense danger, intercept attacks and spread passes all over the pitch.
Blessed with strength and technical bravado in equal measure, Pogba is perhaps the most multifunctional midfielder on the planet. And at just 23, the best is yet to come.
