Former France and Arsenal striker Thierry Henry insists Manchester United should win the title this season.
Man United were plagued by Louis van Gaal‘s uninspiring, restricted form of ‘straitjacket football’ last season, and only managed fifth place.
However, bolstered by the arrival of Jose Mourinho, who has landed a series of impressive signings in Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba, are now among the favourites to claim the title ahead of the 2016/17 campaign.
Speaking on Sky Sports earlier today, Henry claimed that United fans should expect a title win next season.
“Are they ready to win the title? Well they’ve spent enough money over the last few years so, yes, they should be competing this year,” he said.
“They have a great chance. Jose was saying yesterday that he believes it will be a big ask for them to win the Premier League but I don’t think it would be when you look at the players they have signed.
Make no mistake, United had a group of players winning the title last season. A solid defence, a diverse midfield and an youthful, exuberant attack could have gone a long way. Unfortunately, van Gaal’s patient, turgid style and safety first mentality precluded United’s chances of realising their true potential.
Under Mourinho, however, the proposed style and mentality is befitting of title contenders. And with an even richer range of options at his disposal, all signs point towards this United side being capable of an assault on first place.
