Jose Mourinho has revealed Henrikh Mkhitaryan was not happy with him at his treatment during the Community Shield fixture against Leicester City.
Reports suggest Juan Mata was the player upset with Mourinho’s decision to substitute him in injury time, despite only being played on in the 63 minute.
However, Mourinho insists the analysis was wrong and Mkhitaryan was upset as he only came on for a minute and didn’t manage to get a touch of the ball.
“At that moment Mata was the first player to be called up to play and played 25 minutes. He was really happy with his contribution,” he said.
“The one that was not happy was Mkhitaryan because he came on for one minute and didn’t touch the ball.
“So in your analysis you went the wrong way because the one who was upset was Mkhitaryan. Mata was very happy.”
Mkhitaryan would have been disappointed to not play a vital role against Leicester, but he could make his Premier League debut against Bournemouth this weekend.
He hasn’t had much time to play with his new team-mates after the club’s fixture against Manchester City was cancelled, but he is expected to play a fundamental role in Mourinho’s side this season.
Supporters would have hoped to see all of Mourinho’s new signings in action this weekend, but Paul Pogba’s suspension will mean we’ll only have Premier League debuts for Mourinho, Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Mkhitarayn. I’m sure we’ll all be able to wait a week for Pogba to feature against Southampton.
