Southampton manager Claude Puel believes speculation linking Jose Fonte with a move to Manchester United is unusual.
Puel believes Man United may have been behind reports suggesting a move could be possible just days before both teams meet in the Premier League.
Man United host Saints on Friday night and reports claimed Marcos Rojo would be offloaded to try and make space for the Portuguese defender on Jose Mourinho’s side.
Speaking about the proposed transfer, Puel insists it was nothing more than speculation.
“It is just a rumour,” he said.
“It is just strange to see this rumour just before the game against United.
“It is a possibility it comes from United, it is strange. There is no problem with Jose. He is a very good professional.
“It is important to have him with us and we will see for Manchester if he can keep his place or not.
“Jose, the same as [Maya] Yoshida or [Virgil] van Dijk, made good training sessions and it is interesting for the team to have good players for this position.
“Jose is our captain and there is no problem with him.”
Fonte had been continuously linked with a move to Man United, but it looks like it was nothing more than speculation ahead of the game.
While it isn’t the worst outcome, Fonte was still an upgrade on Rojo, who hasn’t been able to win over fans since his arrival at Old Trafford.
His arrival would have bolstered Mourinho’s defensive options for the new season especially as they head into a demanding campaign in the Europa League and Premier League, but it seems it was only just a rumour.
