Raphael Varane reveals why he chose Real Madrid over Man United transfer

Raphael Varane has revealed the reasons behind why he chose to stay at Real Madrid amid interest from Manchester United.

Jose Mourinho signed the Frenchman from Lens in 2011 during his time as Madrid manager, and the youngster swiftly developed into one of the finest defenders in the world under the Special One’s tutelage.

Varane has received strong attention from Man United, alongside other clubs, ever since he broke through the ranks in Spain.

However, Varane has explained his decision to remain at the Bernabeu ahead of the 2016/17 season.

“I trust in the club, and the coach,” Varane said.

“I spoke a lot with [Zidane] and he trusts in me, that was one of my reasons to stay.

“I feel good here, everything is here to show my best, what I am capable of doing. I believe staying is the right thing to do. It was a good decision. I will keep improving. I want this to be a good season for me.”

It is, of course, a shame to see United miss out such an accomplished centre half. At 23, the Frenchman is entering the ripest stage of his career, and is likely to collect plenty of silverware for Los Blancos.

United fans shouldn’t feel too aggrieved, though. In Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling, competently supported by Daley Blind, Mourinho has a powerful array of centre back options at his disposal.
