Jaap Stam confirms interest in Manchester United’s Tyler Blackett

by Leo Nieboer

Former Manchester United centre-back and Reading manager Jaap Stam has confirmed his interest in Tyler Blackett.

Blackett announced himself to Man United supporters through a series of strong performances in 2014, but has failed to impose himself on the starting XI ever since.

The 22-year-old is reportedly not part of Jose Mourinho‘s plans for the 2016/17 season, and was seen at Reading’s 2-2 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion ahead of a potential loan move to the Madejski stadium.

Stam admitted that the club has stepped up their efforts to land the talented youngster before the transfer window closes.

“We’re still looking for a couple of signings. I know Tyler, not personally, but I know what he can do — what type of player he is, the way he can play,” he said.

“We’ve shown our interest but I don’t know if we will succeed getting him to the club.”

When asked why the player was watching his side’s most recent game, Stam smartly replied: “I think he likes watching good football.”

To receive such emphatic recognition and admiration from Jaap Stam – perhaps one of the most terrifying and powerful centre-backs ever seen at Old Trafford – is a huge testament to Blackett’s evident raw ability.

Playing under the tutelage of Stam would undoubtedly help nurture the physical and mental side of Blackett’s game. On the ball, the Englishman is already astonishingly composed. However, when it comes to reading the game and using his imposing physique in the right way, work still needs to be done. And there aren’t many better tutors in that department than the big Dutchman himself.
