Phil Jones is happy to stay at Manchester United this summer – report

by Leo Nieboer

Phil Jones looks set to stay at Manchester United this season, despite Stoke City expressing an interest in the 24-year-old, according to reports.

It was claimed by Mark Bowen that Mark Hughes was keen on bringing Jones to the Britannia before the transfer window shuts, with Arsenal also reportedly monitoring Jones’ status at Old Trafford.

Jones hasn’t featured in any of Jose Mourinho‘s three match-day squads this season and hasn’t featured for Man United since early January. However, according to the Guardian’s Jamie Jackson, United have rejected several enquiries for Jones who is still considered as a crucial defensive option at Old Trafford.

With the likes of Eric Bailly, Daley Blind, Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo all seemingly ahead of Jones in the defensive pecking order, Jones will most likely be limited to the role of a squad player under Mourinho.

Bailly and Blind have looked irreplaceable so far, and it would take something sensational from Jones to assert himself on the first team after such a sustained absence. That said, an injury-free, fully fit Jones can be a truly ominous and imposing figure at the back, espousing a no-nonsense attitude, which somewhat explains why the Portuguese is reluctant to let him leave the club.

United fans will hope to see the tenacious Jones of yesteryear return this season. But with Bailly and Blind growing in stature as a defensive partnership, it could be some time before we see Jones in a United shirt again.
