Mourinho signed the Frenchman from Lille during his time as Real Madrid manager back in 2011, and oversaw the youngster’s development into one of the finest centre backs in Europe.
The talented youngster has been subject to interest from numerous clubs, but revealed earlier this month that he would remain a Real Madrid player after speaking with manager Zinedine Zidane.
And according to Cope, Varane declined an offer made by Mourinho earlier this summer.
It is no secret that Varane has been on Man United’s radar for a number of years. The Frenchman – physically imposing, technically gifted and remarkably quick – would have no problem acclimatising to the aggressive environment of the Premier League.
Any team would be empowered by his presence, and with Varane making up the spine of Zidane’s side, their future promises to reach even greater levels of glamour.
But even in the face of missing out on one of the world’s finest defenders, United fans should remain hopeful. In Eric Bailly, Mourinho has unearthed a rough diamond, someone with no fear, no mercy, and seemingly no capacity to feel pain or cower from danger.
Indeed, the Ivorian has made a blistering start to his time at Old Trafford, and a sustained period of similarly stellar performances in the coming months will leave supporters forgetting about Varane pretty quickly.
