Soccer Saturday presenter Jeff Stelling has tipped Manchester United to win the league this year.
Following a tumultuous 2015/16 campaign under Louis van Gaal, the club has wasted no time in rectifying the mishaps of last year, bringing in Jose Mourinho, who in turn has landed the signatures of Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba.
Mourinho’s side sit in joint first place with Manchester City after two games following comfortable victories over AFC Bournemouth and Southampton.
Speaking on Soccer AM, Stelling insisted that the introduction of Mourinho, Pogba and Ibrahimovic, alongside the presence of Wayne Rooney, makes Man United firm title favourites.
“Man United, I think will win this year,” Jeff Stelling said in Soccer AM’s YouTube video.
“Jose, Pogba, Zlatan, Rooney,” he continued, “nailed on.”
In Mourinho, Pogba and Zlatan, United now have the three biggest egos in football under one roof. Their collective introduction signals the return of the United that everyone loves to hate: arrogant, ruthless warriors with a bloodthirsty desire for victory, espousing an air of superiority wherever they go, allowing that swagger to return as rival fans stew in their own seething hatred of Mourinho and Co.
Such an aura is a hark back to the glory days; a return to the unparalleled success delivered by Sir Alex Ferguson is unlikely, of course, but this group is more than capable of taking the Premier League by storm this year.
