Former Arsenal winger and current Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has heaped praise on Jose Mourinho’s summer signings.
The 53-year-old landed the signatures of Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba, spending a total of £149m.
All four signings have quickly endeared themselves to supporters after playing a fundamental part in Manchester United’s 100% start to their Premier League campaign.
Writing for Sky Sports, Merson expressed his admiration for the players introduced by the Special One this summer, giving Man United an “A+” in transfer window performance.
“Jose Mourinho knew what he wanted and got it,” he wrote.
“He’s come in and got a big midfielder in Paul Pogba, a dressing room leader and goalscorer in Zlatan Ibrahimovic and at the moment Eric Bailly looks very good.
“Henrikh Mkhitaryan will be an absolute star for United as well. He will get in the team soon and when he does, he’ll rip it up. He is different gravy.”
Mourinho arrived at Old Trafford with the perfect mindset: he wasn’t overwhelmed, like poor David Moyes, nor was he blinded by any post-World Cup complacency and misplaced arrogance like Louis van Gaal.
No, he found four key areas that needed improvement – solidity at the back, goalscoring potency, creative zeal, power in midfield – and duly addressed them in a ruthless, business-like way. And as his new recruits fully settle at Old Trafford, United fans, restored with hope and excitement after witnessing four straight wins for the first time since March 2015, will be curious to see exactly how far this galvanised squad can go.
