Mino Raiola: Zlatan Ibrahimovic wanted to join Milan

by Sam Peoples

Mino Raiola has revealed Zlatan Ibrahimovic wanted to join AC Milan this summer but a move was never going to materialise because the club couldn’t afford his wages.

Ibrahimovic joined Manchester United as a free agent after his PSG contract expired and was no doubt given a bumper contract after joining on a free, so it’s no surprise to hear Milan didn’t have enough money to bring him back.

Having spent time at Milan earlier in his career Raiola said the club were close to Zlatan’s heart yet a transfer there was never entertained due to the financials behind the deal.

“Italy cannot afford him, so we had to work out other plans,” Raiola told Mediaset Premium.

“Milan are in his heart, certainly his favourite club in Italy and probably the whole world. But this summer we always worked towards Manchester United.”

Unfortunately, Serie A isn’t what it once was. Back in the day when you had the likes of Gabriel Batistuta at Fiorentina and Alvaro Recoba at Inter Milan it was arguably the best domestic league in the world but until Juventus’ recent renaissance it’s been on a downward curve as a league. Now, the Premier League is the place to be.

Milan’s loss is certainly United’s gain because Ibrahimovic has been fantastic so far with four goals in his first five competitive appearances and the addition of his character in a team which desperately lacked egos, along with the arrival of Jose Mourinho, has helped transformed United’s image immediately.

Will Ibrahimovic be here for more than a season? Maybe, it all depends on how he gets on and what he wants to do but for at least this season alone we’re lucky to get to see one of the modern greats of the game play for United.
