Ian Wright: Marcus Rashford will end up playing alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Ian Wright believes Marcus Rashford will play more for Manchester United over the course of the season and could see him partnering with Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The 18-year-old came off the bench against Hull City in Man United’s most recent Premier League game to bag the winner in dramatic fashion with only seconds left on the clock.

It was a wonderful moment for a player who, up until that point, was yet to play a minute of football under Mourinho and speaking about Rashford, Wright hinted the teenager was too good for Jose to simply dismiss.

“When you see someone like Marcus Rashford come on for United and score, he’s somebody that, for me, is ready to go.” Wright said after England’s win over Slovakia on Sunday.

“I think it’s brilliant what he is doing. He’s not saying too much, he wants to play, he comes on, he scores a goal. He’s forcing the issue for Jose Mourinho.

“If he wasn’t getting the chance to actually come on, score a goal, and then Jose Mourinho has to have him in his thoughts, then we’ve got a problem.

“But I believe half way (through) this season, if he carries on, he’ll end up most probably playing with Ibra (Zlatan Ibrahimovic). He’s ready to go, they can’t hold him back.”

I think Wright is absolutely spot on in the fact that Rashford will play more as the season goes on but I’m not sure there is any chance of him partnering Ibrahimovic up front because of the formation which Mourinho prefers.

In both a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 formation there isn’t room for two strikers to partner each other in attack and I can’t see Mourinho opting for a 4-4-2 any time soon. So, Rashford will have to either come on for Ibrahimovic or play elsewhere with Zlatan staying up front.

Regardless of the specifics, there is no doubt Rashford is going to play a key role for Man United this season and as exciting as our new signings are, seeing born and bred red Marcus doing it on the biggest of stages is going to be just about the best thing you’ll watch this year.
