Jost Mourinho has given his verdict on Manchester United after their 2-1 loss to Manchester City on Saturday evening.
The Portuguese boss had won all three of his league games and was confident heading into the fixture, but his side fell behind early and weren’t able to catch up.
Man United endured a dull first-half after starting slow and let Man City take centre stage for 45 minutes before applying any sort of pressure.
When asked after the game, Mourinho was ruthlessly blunt about his side’s lack of energy.
“I think the first half they were much better,” he said.
“We started to win back. We started the game with players below the normal level.
“We need to be sharp the way we think, the way we play. We had a few players below that level and we were made to pay.
“The second half was completely different. We were in control, much more dangerous. We had chances to equalise.”
The first-half saw United players continuously losing possession and while there were improvements in the second-half the players seemed to miss the urgency to win.
It’s a shame we couldn’t convert one of our later chances into a goal, but Mourinho will have learned vital points about his players after being tested against a harder opposition.
If United are to pose a title challenge to their rivals, these games are a must win, although it’s early in the season, Pep has managed to gain three vital points over Mourinho’s side.
