Manchester United plan £42m bid for Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos – report

by Leo Nieboer

Manchester United are planning to launch a £42m bid for Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos next summer, according to reports.

The Spaniard, who has won eight major honours during his time at the Bernabeu, was subject to several bids from Man United back in 2015.

However, despite expressing a clear interest in coming to Old Trafford, Ramos used United’s interest as a bargaining chip for an improved contract ahead of the 2015/16 season.

But according to Calcio Mercato, Jose Mourinho is keen on pursuing the defender once again next summer.

It was under Mourinho that Ramos truly matured as a defender: a fantastic 2010/11 campaign led to a contract renewal, which in turn led to his finest season in a Madrid shirt – making 51 appearances in all competitions, with Mourinho’s side claiming the title with a record tally of 100 points.

Reuniting with Mourinho, in similar fashion to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, would make sense for Ramos, now approaching the latter stages of his career. It would signal a fresh challenge, an opportunity to demonstrate his worth outside the cosy environment of the Bernabeu.

And with eleven years of experience at the highest level under his belt, alongside a proven aptitude for delivering in big games, Ramos would fit right in at Old Trafford next season.
