Jose Mourinho: Wayne Rooney is my man at Manchester United

Jose Mourinho has responded to criticism of Wayne Rooney after Manchester United’s 4-1 victory over Leicester City at Old Trafford.

Goals from Chris Smalling, Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba helped Man United find four goals in the opening 45 minutes.

The Englishman’s omission played a big role in the victory over the defending champions and the midfield trio of Pogba, Herrera and Mata worked well, much better than it ever has with Rooney at the centre of the park.

Speaking after the game, Mourinho insisted he still completely trusts his captain.

Wayne Rooney is a big player for me, United and this country. He is my man, I trust him completely. He is happy,” Mourinho told Sky Sports.

“It was a very good performance and result. It is not easy against them and not easy to win in the style that we did.”

Leaving Rooney on the bench provided Mourinho with the perfect opportunity to trial something new in midfield and hopes are he has learnt more about what his other players can offer.

It was one of our most convincing wins since Sir Alex Ferguson retired and as expected, all attention has now turned to Rooney and his place on the side.
