Garth Crooks: Paul Pogba has shown what the fuss is about at Man United

Garth Crooks claims Paul Pogba has shown exactly why Manchester United decided to break the world transfer record in order to secure his signature.

The Frenchman was signed for £89m last month, but struggled to demonstrate his worth in the opening few weeks of his Man United career.

However, Pogba’s Man of the Match performance against Leicester City, crowned by a bullet header just before half time, duly silenced his critics.

In his weekly ‘Team of the Week’ column for the BBC, Crooks insisted Pogba’s display against the champions revealed exactly why his arrival has generated so much excitement amongst United fans.

“It’s about time that we’ve seen a little bit of what the fuss was all about,” Crooks wrote.

“Pogba has cost Manchester United an awful lot of money but it has been Wayne Rooney that has been taking all the flack for United’s ordinary start to the season.

“So, in the absence of Rooney, I was particularly pleased to see the Frenchman take control of the game against Leicester and show us what he’s got.

“His chip for Zlatan Ibrahimovic to volley in the first half wasn’t bad and his shot that had Ron-Robert Zieler scrambling across his goal to make the save was even better.

“We then saw a wonderful one-two with Juan Mata to set up his finish before Pogba crowned his performance with his first goal for United with a superb header to wrap the game up completely. Now that’s more like it.”

It is no coincidence that Wayne Rooney‘s omission from the starting XI dovetailed with Pogba’s sudden discovery of form. The Frenchman, for the first time this season, was not charged with defensive duties, nor was he forced to play in conjunction with a man entering the nadir of his career, and the result was emphatic.

This was Pogba at his violent, domineering, swaggering best. With nothing to hold him back, the Frenchman was frightening, and United fans will pray that Mourinho continues deploy him in a similar fashion over the coming months.
