Following a disappointing run of form he was dropped from Mourinho’s side which nailed defending champions Leicester City into the ground last weekend.
Many believed Rooney would return against Zorya Luhansk and be left out of the Premier League clash against Stoke City.
However, Mourinho has confirmed a back injury is likely to keep Rooney out of action.
“I haven’t decided if he will start. He didn’t train yesterday. He had a back problem,” he said.
“I was completely convinced of playing him tomorrow.
“I’m not sure if I do that because with the situation that you create to him I think he really can’t afford to have a performance that is not really good and I am here to protect him and have to analyse the best thing for him.
“If he is not totally ready for it, I will discuss that with the medical staff.”
The Man United squad looked much better against Leicester with Rooney on the bench and his exclusion from the starting XI resulted in one of our most convincing victories since Sir Alex Ferguson‘s retirement.
Rooney has been underperforming for too long to blame his bad form on an injury, but we’ll see what happens with his inclusion in the squad.
