The Portuguese boss named an unchanged league line-up against Stoke City and was hoping to replicate his side’s performance against Leicester City.
Herrera was extremely effective against Leicester and will allow Pogba to roam forward and get stuck in amongst the goals.
Speaking before the match, Mourinho claimed Herrera is an important player for his structure.
“He can be an important player for us, because we play with four attacking players plus Paul who likes a lot to go to different positions, to try and create,” he said.
“But we need a player like Ander because he is very fast on the defensive transition, he can give us the security we need, especially against fast counter attacks.
“There is a long way to go and lots of room for improvement individually, collectively. We need results we need points. We are also worried about the quality of our game, our dynamic, especially our consistency.
Herrera was once again the quiet but effective hero in midfield against Stoke, his defensive ability allowed Pogba to move further forward without having to worry about tracking back as much, something that isn’t possible with Marouane Fellaini on the pitch.
Hopes are they are able to build on the partnership moving forward because once again there were plenty of chances created against Stoke, but the product was not quite there.
