Player Ratings: Manchester United 1-1 Stoke City

by Sam Peoples

David de Gea 6 – That’s the first major mistake I remember from De Gea in such a long time and it was wholly unnecessary. He wasn’t even under pressure but that parry led to Stoke’s equaliser. Poor.

Antonio Valencia 6 – Was a bit of a rash first 45 minutes in terms of his tackling but controlled himself better afterwards.

Chris Smalling 6 – He’ll be having nightmares of getting nutmegged by Shaqiri for a while won’t he? Bailly was better than him today.

Eric Bailly 7 – So far his full throttle defending hasn’t caused him too many problems and that includes today. Didn’t hold back from tackles at all. Favourite moment was when he missed his shot but got up, ran back 30 yards and won the ball back straight away.

Daley Blind 6 – Crossing and set pieces weren’t as dangerous as Leicester City. Nevertheless, played well.

Paul Pogba 6.5 – Should have scored in the first 20 minutes. Clearly enjoyed the free role again. Grew into it when Rooney and Martial came on but should have scored after Rashford’s wonderful cross. Frustrating.

Ander Herrera 7 – Easy to see why Jose Mourinho likes him in defensive midfield. Offers so much more energy than anyone else in the squad in that role and won the ball high up the pitch plenty of times.

Juan Mata 6.5 – He’ll be disappointed not to have made the difference but did show a cutting edge for 65 minutes, it just wasn’t enough.

Jesse Lingard 7 – Gets so much stick from fans but Pieters couldn’t control him in the first half. Could have had a goal an assist but for a great save and a Zlatan miss. Think he did well today, despite the fact we didn’t score with him on the pitch.

Marcus Rashford 7 – Always making runs, always being committed and always looking for the pass. It’s hard to fault Rashford even when things go wrong but he was a real pest today. That outside of the boot pass to Rashford in the second half was filthy too.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic 6.5 – Missed a golden opportunity early on and spurned a couple more. Finishing wasn’t good enough in the first half but he was so dangerous overall. Will certainly be annoyed he didn’t score though.

Wayne Rooney 6.5 – Another game, another inadvertent assist for Rooney. He’s starting quite the collection.

Anthony Martial 8 – What an impact by the Frenchman. One shot, one goal, and he completely changed the dynamic of United going forward. Gets my man of the match for how he changed the game when others couldn’t.
