Ander Herrera called up for Spain duty to replace injured Saul Niguez

Ander Herrera has been called up for Spain’s upcoming international games against Italy and Albania.

Following an injury to Saul Niguez, Spain boss Julen Lopetegui decided Herrera was the ideal replacement and it’s absolutely fantastic news for the Manchester United midfielder.

Herrera is yet to make his Spain debut despite playing for their U20s, U21s and U23s but could well make his debut after being given this opportunity by Lopetegui.

I’m over the moon for Herrera. Ever since he joined Man United I think he’s been overlooked and under-appreciated as a footballer but that’s changing now under Jose Mourinho who clearly sees him as an important player in his squad playing in a new found defensive midfield role.

That excellent form for United has been recognised by Lopetegui and it’s going to have a huge mental impact on Herrera. Spain’s midfield is littered with talent but now he’s in and around it with the likes of Iniesta, Busquets and Niguez. It’s a big moment for Herrera and one he truly deserves.

I’d love to see him make his debut against either Albania or Spain but simply being included in the team is a big step in the right direction. Well done Ander.
