Matteo Darmian has been pictured training with the Italian national side after receiving a recall from Giampiero Ventura.
Darmian was excluded from Ventura’s first Italy squad back in late August, but will get a chance to impress the former Torino boss this week.
The 26-year-old was seen working hard with the Italian squad during a training session in Turin.
It seems as if Darmian, a seemingly undroppable, indispensable asset upon his arrival at Old Trafford, has descended into anonymity under Jose Mourinho.
Recent games against Northampton Town and Zorya Luhansk presented Mourinho with a chance to field various fringe players. A perfect opportunity, therefore, for Darmian to shine. But it was the 18-year-old Timothy Fosu-Mensah who received a chance to stake a claim at right-back, leaving the Italian to ponder over his status at Manchester United, perhaps wondering if a regular starting place for a Serie A side would be preferable to being a third choice right-back in England.
Such a situation is, one might suspect, not much fun. But a recall to the national side gives Darmian an opportunity to take his mind off his sticky situation at Man United, whilst also allowing the right-back to demonstrate his worth to Mourinho ahead of the clash with Liverpool at Anfield on October 17.
